Online Program
You are committed, motivated and ready to get your
life back.
Assisted Recovery recognizes that for many reasons, an alcohol dependent
individual may not be able to access either our Outpatient
program for clients who live in the Phoenix area or the Accelerated
Program for out of area clients. We further recognize the difficulty in
finding a state-of-the-art, non-12 step, and evidence-based treatment program.
In response, we offer the Assisted Recovery Online Program, which will provide
individuals with the basics of the Pennsylvania Model of
Recovery. We have found these programs to be very effective for highly
motivated individuals, who are comfortable using a computer and have internet
access.
The Assisted Recovery Online Program is not as comprehensive or time consuming as either the Outpatient or Accelerated programs. It is designed for individuals who consider themselves self-starters and have set a goal of maintaining control over their lives. It is probably not appropriate for people who have attempted recovery numerous times and have failed.
One of the cornerstones of the Pennsylvania Model of Recovery
is the utilization of effective, safe medications,
which dramatically assist in the recovery process. Any licensed physician
can write a prescription for the medications that are used in our program.
The reality, however, is that the vast majority of physicians simply will
not consider pharmacotherapy. Most physicians have less than two hours of
formal training in treating alcohol dependence. Upon asking a physician for
help, the standard response seems to be “go to AA.”
Assisted Recovery will
work with you to ask your personal physician to write
the prescriptions, or will help you to find a physician in your area who will.
This includes having your physician speak directly to our Medical
Director and providing you with written documentation, for example Treatment
Improvement Protocol #28, Naltrexone and Alcoholism Treatment: Physicians
Guide.
It must be remembered however, that while extremely effective, the medications are tools rather than a cure. They literally will level the playing field, enabling you to focus on the truly difficult part of the recovery process, which is learning how to be happy in life, without the alcohol. To achieve this goal, Assisted Recovery utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as developed primarily by Dr. Albert Ellis, PhD
The Online Program offers one live counseling session per week via our chat room. While not as intimate as a person-to-person group session, the chat session nonetheless provides an opportunity to share experiences and to work on recovery goals. A licensed counselor facilitates each chat session. Online clients can also post their comments and thoughts 24 hours a day in a monitored message board. (Click to see a sample) This enables an individual to work on recovery at any time, day or night.
Online clients are provided with the unique Assisted Recovery Client Manual, which details our Pennsylvania Model program. The goal of the manual is to teach you how to apply Cognitive Behavioral Therapy not only to improve your ability to remain alcohol free but to enhance your life skills. In addition, each participant receives a copy of When AA Doesn't Work for You: Rational Steps to Quitting Alcohol, by Albert Ellis, PhD and Assisted Recovery’s Clinical Director, Emmett Velten, PhD In addition, a copy of Recovery Options, The Complete Guide, by Joseph Volpicelli, MD, PhD of the University of Pennsylvania, and one of the fathers of the Pennsylvania Model of Recovery.
