Emmett Velten, PhD, holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Chicago and a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Southern California. His dissertation produced the Velten Mood Induction Procedure, which is widely used in research on mood states.

Dr. Velten is a past president of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, a member of the Board of Trustees and of the Board of Professional Advisors of the Albert Ellis Institute in New York.
